We offer the opportunity to explore the unique landscape of Africa from the backs of our ponies and small horses. From spirited Arabians to relaxed Quarter Horse mixes and resilient local breeds, there is something for every rider. The weight limit is a maximum of 80kg, and the horses are ridden in a classic English style. Comfortable trail saddles are used during the safaris.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, we cater to everyone’s needs. For children or those who don’t feel confident enough to follow a horse safari freely, we offer the option to be led by the guide with a lead rope, or you can gain some experience with a riding lesson.
Experienced riders can look forward to galloping through riverbeds or taking an exciting ride through the mountains, demanding sure-footedness from our horses and courage from the riders.
During the horse safaris, you will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will gladly answer your questions about the animal and plant life.
Our horses have beautiful stables and plenty of pasture to keep them in good spirits. Mares and geldings are mixed in a herd and have access to the outdoors year-round. For training the horses, we have a 20*60m dressage arena and a small cross-country course.
Six of our horses are experienced guide horses with character and experience in encountering wildlife and different riders. But our young stars are also impressive. They are calm, willing, and attentive. Our goal is to train horses that are safe for beginners to ride and also provide experienced riders with a lot of fun. All horses are regularly ridden and further trained. We offer rides for up to six people per group.

Outrides (outside the Carefree Packages)
If you have booked Düsternbrook as a regular traveler, we offer outrides with wildlife observation in addition to other activities such as game drives. Time: mornings and afternoons. The duration depends on the rider’s skills, with 60 minutes for beginners and 90/120 minutes for advanced riders.
Price guidelines:
Euro 36.00/60 minutes;
Euro 40.00/90 minutes.
Carefree Packages:
4 or more days of Horse Safaris
We have put together a special, highly flexible, worry-free horse safari package for you, which can be booked for 4 days (basic package) up to 7 days. These can be extended with so-called add-ons. All horse safaris generally take place in the mornings and afternoons. If you book the 4-7 days horse safari package, you will ride in the mornings and afternoons according to your booked riding duration. However, this can also be flexibly coordinated with our other activities. During our summer season (September to the end of March), we start riding earlier, around 7:00 or 7:30 before breakfast, and in winter, we ride after breakfast at 8:00.

A recommendation for the add-ons:
- For luxury extensions (on the farm), we recommend a minimum of 2 days and 2 nights.
- For the Swakopmund Package, 3 to 4 full days are suggested, as you can only do a maximum of 2 activities per day. This way, you will have some time left to explore and relax in Swakopmund.
Carefree Horse Safari Packages
The following is included in the price of the 4-7 days horse safari package:
Pick-up from the International Airport or from Windhoek
- Accommodation of your choice at Düsternbrook: Colonial House (2 stars) or Rock House (3 stars)
- Half board (dinner and breakfast)

- Guided horse riding for 1-3 hours per day with an experienced guide

Here is how your Carefree Package could look like
Note: The following description and explanation refer to the year 2024, but it also applies to 2023. It is now better and clearer described. The difference (besides the prices) between the years 2024 and 2023 is as follows: In 2024, there won’t be an 8-day package anymore, and it will only go from 4 to 7 days. Extension can now be booked with 2 additional add-ons: 1. Luxury extension on the farm or 2. Swakopmund Package. The Swakopmund Package is similar to the 8-day package of 2023, which is still valid until 30.11.2023.
Day 1:
Arrival at Düsternbrook: Pick-up from the airport, check-in. After a short break, you may have your first encounter with the horses and a discussion with the guides to plan the following days. Depending on the arrival time, you may experience the first horse ride or one of the free activities. Dinner and first night.
Day 2:
Before breakfast, meet at the stable at 7:00 with the horses already saddled, and head out for the first horse ride. After 1-2 hours of riding, you’ll be back just in time for breakfast. After that, you can relax by the pool, use the Wi-Fi, and have a light lunch (not included). In the afternoon, participate in one of our activities of your choice, or if you’ve chosen a specific package, another horse ride follows. Then, dinner and the end of the day. Second night.
Day 3:
Similar to Day 2, depending on the arrangement with the guides. Third night.
Day 4:
Similar to the previous days, depending on the arrangement with the guides. This concludes the basic package, and then you can choose between:
- Flexible extension for up to 7 days
- Add-ons
- Departure
Day 5:
First extension with Sundowner ride (at no additional cost) Similar to the days before, depending on the booked riding hours. In the late afternoon, we head out for the Sundowner ride to a beautiful spot with a view. Here, you’ll find a covered Sundowner table with snacks and a drink of your choice. After the sun has set, you will be driven to dinner by carriage, and the guides will take care of the horses. (Duration: approx. 2.5 hours)
Day 6:
Second extension with Breakfast ride (at no additional cost) You ride to the Hippodam, where a covered breakfast table awaits you with a view of the Hippo Lake. After breakfast, you’ll ride back to the farmhouse. (Duration: approx. 3 hours)
Day 7:
Third extension with Overnight in the bush. Depending on the booked package and the number of days (at no additional cost), in the afternoon, you’ll embark on another 1.5 to 2-hour ride to another overnight spot on the farm. After unsaddling and taking care of the horses, you’ll be treated to a campfire with a Sundowner drink. We’ll serve you a typical Namibian barbecue (vegetarians, please pre-register). You’ll experience a “in the bush” adventure with a stunning starry sky. The next morning, before breakfast, you’ll ride back to the farmhouse, where breakfast awaits you.
Explanation: With your package, you can choose whether you want to ride for 2 or 3 hours per day to explore various routes. The riding hours may vary each day, sometimes being more or less. However, you’ll reach the total number of booked hours at the end of your vacation (2 or 3 hours per day x number of booked days = total riding hours during your entire stay).
These are the 7 days fully utilized and completed. After 4, 5, 6, or 7 days, it would be just an initial conclusion. Now, you can extend your experience with two add-ons.
Luxury extension on the Farm:
Here, we offer you 2 (or more) beautiful days at our new 4-star Mini-Luxury Lodge, “Point of View,” located 11 km from the main farmhouse. After concluding your individual riding safari, you’ll ride to the POV the next morning for approximately 2.5 hours. There, you’ll enjoy breakfast with a magnificent view of nature.
- The POV offers an infinity pool,
- a restaurant,
- a watering hole,
- and, of course, WLAN.
This will be a grand finale to your farm stay. You’ll have more delightful rides with plenty of galloping opportunities and the chance to observe wildlife. Alternatively, instead of riding hours, you can also go on a Game Drive in this area.
Swakopmund Package:
This package offers an all-inclusive experience spending several days in the holiday town of Swakopmund, by the Atlantic Ocean. It includes
- transfers (Farm-Swakopmund and Swakopmund-Airport),
- accommodation in a central and spacious holiday apartment with all amenities for self-catering.
- Additionally, you can choose from various activities in Swakopmund, such as a beach ride, Sundowner ride, boat tour to spot dolphins or possibly whales, a tour to the dunes to learn about life there, or a quad bike tour in the dunes. Depending on the available days, you can select from the menu, and we’ll arrange everything with round-trip transfers.
