Birdlife
Although Düsternbrook is not primarily a birding destination, the presence of permanent water at Andreas Dam and seasonal water along the riverbeds attracts a good variety of birdlife.
Around 250 bird species have been recorded in the area over time, with numbers varying throughout the year. Birdlife is generally more abundant during the summer and rainy season, when water and food sources are more widely available, while the winter months tend to be quieter.
The hiking trail to Andreas Dam, as well as the areas around the main house, often provide good opportunities for birdwatching. During the rainy season, waterbirds become more frequent and occasionally even the Black Stork can be seen.
Typical species of the Khomas Hochland that can often be observed on the farm include Monteiro’s Hornbill, Damara Rockrunner, Ashy Tit, Rüppell’s Parrot and the Rosy-faced Lovebird.
While hiking or exploring the farm, guests will often encounter birds along the riverbeds, rocky hillsides and around water sources, making birdwatching a pleasant addition to many walks and outdoor activities.
