What to do at guest farm Düsternbrook?
- Our main wildlife attraction is called Cats Unlimited: viewing of leopard and cheetah in their natural environment.
- A (plains) game drive through our private game reserve, Otjihorongo ("Place of the Kudu"), offers you a first-hand impression of Namibian wildlife. The following game can be seen: oryx, kudu, giraffe, Burchell's zebra, waterbuck, warthog, cape eland, steinbuck, wildebeest (gnu), hartebeest, baboon, jackal, and rhino. Birdlife is also plentiful and diverse (see Birdwatching, below).
- Mountain Drive. This drive into the Khomas Highlands is very scenic, and besides oryx and kudu you could also see the rarely seen Hartmann's mountain zebra, which is endemic to Namibia. This drive we offer mostly in the morning as there are other activities in the afternoon. If you book two nights this drive is free. Coffee and tea is being served on this drive.
- Rhino tracking. A guide will take you on an adventurous trip to find our white rhinos in their natural habitat. First you are going to find fresh tracks by car. Once found you will continue by foot to locate the rhino('s). A very exciting experience!- Horse-riding with viewing of game such as giraffe, kudu, oryx, zebra, and many others - with horses you get very close to the game (please book a day in advance).
- Take a swim in our swimming pool or relax on our sun beds around the pool and get a tan!
- Walking: We have different well-marked walks from 1 hour to 4 hours where you also can see wildlife including our rich birdlife.
- Birdwatching. Namibia is a birdwatcher's paradise and about 160 species have been recorded at Düsternbrook. Many of these birds can be found right around the farmhouse, guest rooms, and campground. We have documented five southern African endemics (South African Shelduck, Cape Vulture, Ashy Tit, Anteating Chat, and Rockrunner). The walking trails offer particularly good birding venues. Our guides have some training in bird identification and we have checklists, binoculars, and field guides available on request.
- 4x4-mountain trail: a self-drive tour into the mountains and sandy riverbed, about 14 km in length.
- Mountaineering to the "Khomas-Eck" (1,850 m elevation) is a day tour for adventurers in the rough and wildly romantic landscape of the Khomas Highlands. We are a member of the Khomas Hochland Conservancy with 200,000 ha and we support the Cats Unlimited Wildlife Foundation
